Eric's Story
My Name is Eric*. I first came to the Ferry Project in the 2010s. I stayed for a time, and eventually moved on after finding a good full-time job.
Years later, I was made redundant. This hit me hard, and I turned to alcohol to cope. Eventually I could not afford to live in my home, so I returned to the Ferry Project. I was embarrassed, feeling like I was back at square one, and I really struggled to quit drinking.
Then, in 2022, I was diagnosed with epilepsy.
From the very beginning, I received emotional support from my keyworker, with whom I had developed a strong bond. As I began to overcome the embarrassment, I was referred to Ferry Project’s counsellor. At last I found a person to help me work through my trauma and heal. Soon my mental health improved.
I was bored from being unemployed, so I began volunteering. Soon I was learning new skills, gaining the confidence to once again start applying for jobs. My positivity and independence returned, and through the counselling I was receiving, I was able to drastically reduced my alcohol intake. Now it’s no longer a problem.
My epilepsy diagnosis also means I can receive the treatment I needs to stay healthy and safe.
The Ferry Project was able to help me find healing for my mental health, overcome my alcohol addiction, and regain the confidence I needed to move forward with my life.
I now share a home with my girlfriend, and can look with hope to the future ahead of me.
